Last week I joined the 9th edition of the Automattic 5K relay.
We do that twice a year. As a 100% distributed company we don’t get to be together a lot. So we find ways to connect. I talked more about this here.
So, twice a year we run. Separately but together. During the 24 hours of a day we have at least one, but usually multiple, Automatticians running somewhere around the world.
We had a channel in Slack where we post a pic before starting, then when you are done you post another pic, your stats, itinerary (just for fun, it’s not a competition), and you favourite recovery snack, with, of course, another picture. You can also add other pictures you took along the way.
This time I went running with a friend for the first time (not an Automattician) after 1h working out at the gym. I thought I was not gonna make it, but it felt actually pretty good.
We went to a nice park and got a really nice view at the end. The day was amazing, the weather was great and the fall colours are starting to show. Could not have been better.
You can read more about the event here.
I can’t wait for the next one. I have developed a taste for running lately. I started last year. Was going really well following one of those 0 to 5K apps. Was on week 8 out of 9 when xmas came and I got really sick (not covid, but holy guac, I thought I was gonna die. I mean, not really, but it was awful). And that disrupted my routine.
So I started working out again slowly and running again, but then I went to Brazil, and things slowed down a bit because I was not able to join a gym there (could not find one close to my parent’s house that would accept me paying for one month only) so I was running at the beach, but it was during the winter, which means a lot of rain. You get the idea.
So I only got serious again about running in August when I got to Norway and was able to get back to a gym. And since then I’ve been on the program and it’s been really good. Currently on week 7. Running 25 minutes straight. So, back to a good place.
Even got a new pair of runners and changed my LIFE:
It’s like running on a cloud. GEEZ!!!
I have a feeling I’m never gonna be able to buy another brand. Thanks to my sister for suggesting it.
