Repost: “Sync Overload”—And How to Avoid It

Working remotely from Tulum, Mexico

Being part of a fully distributed, remote-first, remote-last, remote-all-the-way-to-the-core, remote-always company is an amazing thing.

Specially when we are going through a wave of RTO (return to office) mandates lately. I thought the world would be different, more ready for the remote world after 2 years of statistics showing things get better when you let employees work from home. But nope.

Anyways.

One thing that I notice when I am around people who work for other companies while they are working from home is the amount of calls.

You would think that at Automattic, we would spend a huge chunk of our time on Zoom calls, right?

Well, not really. It’s a fact that, as a team lead, I have way (WAY) more calls than I used to have when I was an IC, but still is way less calls than some of my friends. Sync time is precious and it should be treated like it.

You can read a bit more about how Automattic works here: “Sync Overload”—And How to Avoid It.

I hope you enjoy!
